Overcoming Space Constraints with UPACS Single Door Solutions
In modern data centres, space is at a premium. Legacy buildings, retrofit projects, or densely populated white space layouts often present physical constraints that make standard containment designs impractical. One common challenge occurs at the end of a cold aisle where there is insufficient clearance to install traditional double doors.
The Challenge
In this case, a constricted space at one end of a cold aisle prevented the installation of UPACS double end doors. However, maintaining effective cold aisle containment and safe, compliant access for engineers remained a critical requirement. The aisle itself was 1200mm wide, but surrounding infrastructure limited the available footprint for end-of-aisle door hardware.
The DCE Solution
DCE addressed this challenge by designing and installing a wider single UPACS door instead of a standard double-door configuration. To achieve this, the UPACS end frame was lengthened, allowing for a 960mm clear door opening while maintaining full structural integrity and airflow containment. This solution delivered several key benefits:
- Maintained containment efficiency without compromising airflow separation
- Improved personnel access, even with large equipment or tools
- Full compliance with safety and access requirements
- Seamless integration with the existing UPACS framework
By adapting the system rather than forcing a standard configuration, DCE ensured that the customer
achieved the same operational performance they would expect from a traditional cold aisle — even
within tight spatial constraints.
Why It Matters
UPACS is designed to be modular and adaptable. Whether working in a purpose-built data hall or a restrictive retrofit environment, DCE can tailor cold aisle containment to suit real-world conditions without sacrificing performance or safety.
