Expansion for Two Phase Development

Problem

The client required a new cold aisle POD to be deployed in two distinct phases, while maintaining multiple cabling connections to an existing UPACS POD in the same data hall. This phased approach was necessary to ensure that live services remained operational throughout the project and to align with the clientu2019s wider expansion programme.

A key design challenge was the presence of third-party live racks located within the footprint of the proposed future POD extension. These racks could not be relocated immediately and were scheduled for removal at a later date. Compounding the issue, the third-party racks were out of alignment with the new floor plan, meaning that a full UPACS framework could not be installed without obstructing the opening of the third-party rack doors.

The solution therefore needed to support current operational requirements, while also enabling a seamless future expansion once the third-party equipment was removed.

Solution

DCE designed and installed a partial UPACS framework specifically to support the wire basket containment and fibre ducting required for immediate connectivity. This infrastructure was positioned and fixed in such a way that it could remain in place and later form an integral part of the completed cold aisle containment system.

By decoupling the cabling infrastructure from the final containment build, DCE enabled the future expansion racks to be slid into position once the third-party equipment was removed, without disturbing existing cables or live services. When the second phase of the POD was deployed, the retained UPACS framework and cable support system seamlessly integrated into the completed cold aisle.

This approach delivered:

  • Continued operation of live environments
  • Secure cabling connectivity between PODs
  • A clear, low-risk path for future expansion
  • No rework or disruption during phase two deployment
